The Life of John Golden

Early Life and First Marriage

John Golden was born in April of 1830 in Ohio, according to the 1900 census. We presume he married his first wife, Amanda Jane Lingenfelter, before the first of their children was born in 1858 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania.

Just two years later, in the 1860 census, the family were living in Lackawannock where John was a farm laborer. There were now two children in this family, George and Sarah.

The Civil War Years and Growing Family

Over the next ten years, while the Civil War tore the United States apart, the Golden family welcomed four more children into the world: Lenora, John, Edward, and Charles. There are no records to indicate that our John served in the Civil War.

By 1870, home was in Slippery Rock in Butler County, Pennsylvania. John was a day laborer and, according to the census, they were living next door to Amanda Jane’s parents, George and Jane Lingenfelter.

Two more children would join the family—Samuel in 1876 and Josephine in 1880—when John was now listed as a laborer in Franklin, Venango County.

Separation and New Marriages

Sometime after this, John and Amanda split up. Amanda wound up in Bradford, McKean County, Pennsylvania.

John’s records are more mysterious. We found two marriage records and believe they are both connected to our John Golden.

It appears that Catherine Moore became the second wife of John in 1886. The marriage record also indicates the names of John’s parents: George and Sarah. This marriage was rather short.

In 1890, John married for the third time. This time the bride was Margaret Stewart.

Later Years and Final Records

It seems John and Margaret were still married when the 1900 census was taken. They were living together in Ridgeway, Elk County, Pennsylvania. John was 70 and listed his occupation as teamster.

This was the last known record that we have of John.

Margaret appears in the 1910 census in Oil City, Venango County, as a widow, and she passed away in 1921. She was a widow on her death certificate, and there is no mention of John in her obituary.
